Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
