Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
