This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
