Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I'm not going anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I will not yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, military troops from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, a military installation approximately 50 miles from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as murders.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military forces readying for deployment, according to reports. Authorities indicated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard patches were spotted at the military facility in the town. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were arranged in lines. Extra barriers was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until early December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in the city in the past month, triggering demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action targeting the administration, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday banning ICE officers and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using military forces as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to send active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying national authority.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 cities, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the military presence is necessary to fight violence and protect ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime across the US has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were down nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, per law enforcement reports.

New survey data published on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
