Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
